Diary of George Philip Clark [manuscript], 1863-1865.

The collection consists of a typed transcription of Clark's Civil War diary by James F. Saunders, III, including Saunder's biographical notes on Clark. The diary begins before the battle of Gettysburg and very briefly describes his participation, wounding, and capture in Pickett's charge; prison hospital on Davids Island, N. Y.; death of Albert H. Good of Albemarle County; exchange and furlough; rejoining the 7th regiment in North Carolina; the siege and capture of Plymouth, N. C. by Robert F. Hoke; further marching in North Carolina and return to Virginia. Clark continues in a diary captured at Plymouth, originally that of Thomas H. Heppard. He mentions the siege of Petersburg; Drewry's Bluff; skirmishing, marching, picket duty, and fortification work; Cold Harbor; Five Forks; and Sayler's Creek. He also mentions distribution of rations and pay, firing on Union Negro pickets, desertions and executions, recruitment, a dinner sponsored by the citizens of Free Union, a camp revival and baptisms, and visits from home, and notes whenever he sees Robert E. Lee. The diary also contains a list of 7th Virginia men on Davids Island.
